Character & Texture

Early on in the development process (summer '07), we workshopped the original draft of "Betty" with actress Heather Poulsen, exploring the character's world and emotional range before moving into development with Annie. That fall, we took the work a step further, teaming with Sean, Joy, Laurie, and Naomi on a photo shoot with Heather P., resulting in the images you see featured throughout this site. We explored moments from the script, digging into the emotion while experimenting with Betty's physical look and environmental textures and tones. We shot both black & white and color, digital and film.

We discovered a palette for Betty...a first step in achieving the emotional intensity and artistry we'll create when shooting on film.

Betty is rugged, and harsh. Her world is fractured and at times brutal. She's reaching for a flower...that something so small, tender and promising of life could still be alive...in here...in her...

In isolation, light pouring in becomes part of a dream, part of the truth, part of her escape... ~ cowriter Ixaac Ackley
